Today I have added to my published books with an Autobiography of memories of the 1950's. They are found at  Amazon, books, under my full name.  The memories are so poignant, in reflection they feel as though I am back there and reexperiencing each situation, probably because there was not much of what distracts us today, such as: TV, Telephones (except for emergencies),Cell Phones,Computers,or more than one car per family.  I have to say, that though we were limited to only three or four clothes changes and that truthfully it is easier to write on a computer than the old typewriters, the times were more comfortable, mentally and emotionally satisfying and relaxing overall.  I do hope that you will take a peak and ultimately decide to purchase my latest, and yes....all of my published works.  Thank you.

SUSANNA FULLER WHITE WINSLOW

MY 10TH GREAT GRANDMOTHER

Find on Amazon under books, Kathleen Boston McCune

Woman in Leyden, Norway in Pilgrim clothing.

Left: Pilgrim woman making minced pie

This is a true story of a strong woman related by DNA, who has never enjoyed the notoriety which surely should belong to her and all the women who were on this fate-filled journey across the Atlantic Ocean during the winter months.  I wrote it for this reason and the following as well:  https://www.amazon.com/Susanna-Fuller-White-Winslow-Grandmother/dp/1690184515/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_pdt_img_top?ie=UTF8

"    FORWARD

As a history buff and unofficial family analyst of ancestry, I decided when I found that we are directly related to two families who boarded the Mayflower and made it as far as Plymouth Rock, to record most everything anyone might want to learn about this crossing in 1620.

My 10th Great Grandfather, William White[i] died several days upon landing, but his son, who is also my 9th Great Grandfather Peregrine White, was born on the 19th of December, 1620 while he and his mother, Susanna Fuller White, my 10th Great Grandmother, were still aboard the Mayflower.  The weather was typical for that era for the northeastern coastline of America, and considerably colder and snowier than the weather from which these Puritans were familiar.  For this reason and the fact that illness was quickly claiming the lives of too many, most of the women and children were left aboard the vessel until cabins could be built by the ship’s crew and the men not already too ill to help.  The cabins would not be ready for over three months, at which time those still alive were brought ashore.

Since I found more than one reference to Susanna (Peregrine’s mother) being born at Redenhall, Norfolk, England (the known Mansion of the Fuller family), I had to make the logical leap that her maiden name must surely be Fuller; though several other historians disagree with this assumption.

The question of why only four of the 27 women survived the first year once landed, while the others did not, persisted in the back of my mind throughout the writing of this treatise. I decided to further study the profiles of these women, namely: Susanna Fuller White, Eleanor Billington, Mary Brewster and Elizabeth Hopkins.  They all came from totally different households, from wealthy to middle class and from innocently pure to obnoxiously loud and pushy to pursue the raising of their children in this foreign clime. What they shared was that they all had at least two children onboard with them less than 16 years old and all but one had children who were still nursing. Also, two had new-born babes, either born on the trip over or as soon as the Mayflower landed. My personal deduction was that the hormone Oxytocin, a hormone present in nursing mothers, relaxes the mother, thus reducing levels of stress. This may have helped these women deal with what otherwise may have caused increased levels of adrenaline, which weakens the body after reason for stress is removed, and would have left adrenaline available when needed to fend off disease exposure, saving themselves and their young.

I will be covering the Mayflower Compact, the vessel Mayflower and as many of the personalities as are written of throughout this history book.  There are millions of Americans alive today whose forefathers and/or foremothers were on this ship so important to the founding of our country.

It is my hope that all who read will be spurred on to find their own background and how it may relate to being a part of this wonderful land we call America.

MAYFLOWER VOYAGE~AN HISTORICAL TREATISE

For everyone who wondered if they are related to someone who came to America aboard the Mayflower, and for history buffs world-wide, my new book, MAYFLOWER VOYAGE, An Historical Treatise should satisfy each and everyone.

Also, a terrific choice for all school aged youngsters, whether home schooled, public or parochial  schooled. Included are two letters from teenager Lizzy (Elizabeth Tilley-see her statue at the Mayflower Museum @ Plymouth), who wrote from aboard ship and once landed to her Aunt still in England.

For you ancestry/genealogy buffs, every passenger is profiled with as much information as is available for the telling and maiden names are listed as well for the wives. Also, for those who need DNA profiles, they too are available from the men listed who it is known have lineage alive today.

All information is referenced for checking and further exploring more details for those so inclined.

This was an enlightening experience and one I know you too will enjoy. Available now on Amazon under Kathleen Boston McCune, author.

Renown British Author Reviews: PIONEERS WITH PURPOSE ~

A Review of PIONEERS WITH PURPOSE :

PIONEERS WITH PURPOSE is an epic story, based on an actual family history, which has been skilfully brought to life by the talented author Kathleen Boston McCune. The chief protagonists, Serena and Perry Campbell have been aiding escaped slaves flee from the oppression of the South at the advent of the Civil War. Now fearing retribution from southern, pro slavery, sympathizers, they set out to make a new life in Kansas.

This book is written with such exquisite detail, deftly creating a “spirit of place”, that I was instantly transported back in time to the world of the pioneer. The descriptions of what they ate, how they dressed, what they thought and the hardships they endured are so realistically   portrayed that I felt I was making the journey with them. I was particularly taken with Serena Campbell, whose stoic outlook and cheerful nature, even after the tragic loss of three children, bound the story together. Her devotion to her husband, family neighbours and friends, despite the many hardships of the trail is both heart warming and inspirational.  As seen through the eyes of the pioneer families this book covers one of the most significant periods of American history, in essence, the birth of a nation, from the gradual dispossession of the native people, the destruction of the buffalo herds, to the coming of the railway and the building of frontier towns to great cities.
PIONEERS WITH PURPOSE is an engrossing read, whilst being both educational and entertaining. As an author of historical fiction based on fact, I can truly appreciate the fine detail that makes this book stand out from the crowd. I am normally a fast reader, but I took my time with this one because there was so much to absorb and it was well worth it.

I can thoroughly   recommend PIONEERS WITH PURPOSE, not only to devotees of history, but to anyone who enjoys a well written family saga. If this isn’t already on your “Must Read” list, then add it now.

THE COWBOY & ELLSWORTH

Last Thursday I met The Cowboy, AKA Jim Gray.  We met in Ellsworth which was a trip I would recommend to anyone who would like to see the Flint Hills in their autumn glory.  The grasses are all in shades of rust and deep violet, interspersed with carved rocks revealing their layers of Kaibab Limestone, Hermit Shale, Bright Angel Shale and ending with Tapeats Sandstone.  The kaleidoscope of shades competes with the grasses now growing naturally in these flint hills which are trying to come back to their original beauty.  When we finally reached the little town remaining in Ellsworth we found the Government Buildings to be in generally good shape but every other store front downtown seemed empty and screaming for recognition earned by the forefathers and foremothers known in the 1860s as America’s Pioneers.  As the railroads and other landholders have had their way with many towns not garnering what they consider to be enough “Bottom Line”, the few families related to the original Pioneers and others testing living in a small town are clinging to a rope that seems greased and guarantying eventual death of not only ideals but a frontier washed in the history and frontier morals now mostly ignored by those who could insure these monuments to our past are honored with the survival such as the windmills pushing up to the heavens by GE and VESTA are attempting.
Jim and I exchanged books, signing our names and wishes to one another as my husband and mother gathered up information provided for the few tourists and we all enjoyed a delicious lunch at Padens where we couldn’t talk quickly enough to share our historical finds which lace both our books.
We definitely will return to spend more time checking the gravesites and family Homesteads and hope that our next trip finds the area more populated and growing rather than in such decline.
